Volume One Folk

Gloucester 400+

What a journey. This has turned into an incredibly interesting, enjoyable, and rewarding look into our local music focused on a collection of Folk musicians who've been playing around the area, some for many years and some just beginning. I'm especially pleased to have captured Folks who've had a great presence in Gloucester and the Cape Ann area

What a journey.  This has turned into an incredibly interesting, enjoyable, and rewarding look into our local music  focused on a collection of Folk musicians who've been playing around the area, some for many years and some just beginning.  I'm especially  pleased to have captured Folks who've had a great presence in Gloucester and the Cape Ann area who are not as present online or on social media.     With Manship Artist Residency as the main setting, the music, spirit, and performances came to life surrounded by natural beauty, art, and history, all while feeling like you were in a home, creating an unmatched sense of atmosphere.  My production technique was inspired by the Field Recordings of Alan Lomax for the Smithsonian and Library of Congress,  recording Live and without using a recording Studio or many of the modern methods except for one track which was previously recorded.   After living and working with this material for so long I've developed an even greater appreciation for what we have here in Gloucester.  I hope others will have the same experience and that this collection will be an inspired resource for generations to come.

I'd especially like to Thank  Tony Goddess, Chris Deering, Michael Gallagher, Rebecca Reynolds, The King Family, Isabel Pett, Gloucester 400, and Manship Artist Residency, for their support and advice during the process.

The Story snapshots are what I could capture in a short amount of time after the recording sessions, sometimes at night in low light.

and lastly,  This project started as a template demonstration to show what was possible, and what the idea for a Genre specific Volume with multiple artists could look and sound like. The cohesiveness created by the setting weaves throughout.  That is why instead of just engineering and producing a recording session I managed a photo shoot and exit interview using just an iPhone, an amazing space, my experiences producing records, my love for museums and galleries,  plus a ton of trusting your instincts, to capture as best as I could in a short amount of time that special atmosphere.   Add countless hours editing, mixing, and producing the final Volume including these notes and I truly believe we've got something special.    If the reception of this Volume is positive this may only be the beginning.   Jazz has already come to mind as under-represented, and with sufficient support I'd ideally partner with Videographers, Photographers, and Sound Engineers, and work as Producer on site,  locations being Downtown, Magnolia, Rocky Neck, and Lanesville for the next one.    Forever inspired to action! All The Best,  Dan King
